I have always had an equal interest in the realms of physiotherapy called rehabilitation as well as a newer idea called pre-habilitation. Everyone has heard of rehabilitation where a person comes in injured and we use our manual therapy and exercise prescription skills to help and coach them back to being pain-free and functional in life. Prehabilitation, on the other hand, is the idea that we can anticipate injury or pain and do everything in our power to future proof our muscles and joints in attempt to prevent an injury from occurring in the first place. Pilates is an amazing form of exercise that fits extremely well into both the realms of prehab and rehab. It seems to be the missing link in the chain for a lot of people to really future proof their body, or use as a stepping stone along their journey from injury to performance.
I have learnt a lot about the different avenues and applications of Pilates exercises from the team here at Loft Pilates, and it’s really exciting to be able to utilise this unique form of exercise for everyone from patients who need help with their strength and muscular control, to the weekend warrior who is looking for another type of exercise that will help them look good, feel great and be able to achieve all of the activities they want and more. If you are someone who has been interested in trying Pilates but never taken the plunge, DO IT. I haven’t met a person yet who has regretted the decision to start.
